Electric
Fires and their Designs
The next type are Vent-Free. These
work without a vent at all such as a flue or chimney
so electric
fires can be installed anywhere in your home.
You can also get vent free gas fires and gas log fires.
These are low in cost and 99% efficient so great when
there are powercuts. They comply to the ANSI safety standards.
They also do not go above 40,000 BTU’s of heat
so can be a great investment for heating any home. Whereas
electric fires work on electricity, vent free fires work
on natural of propane gas instead of electric as electric
fires require. A permanent line is required for the propane
gas to enter the fire.
The side effects of these vent free fires unlike electric
fires is they give off carbon monoxide which is highly
dangerous as well as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide,
oxygen and water vapor (humidity). After 1980, all vent
free gas heaters have been produced with safety pilot systems
called an oxygen detection safety pilot or also known as
a ODS.
Direct Vent fires use a coaxial pipe which brings in oxygen
from the outside and used to combust the gas.

Many older houses have fireplaces which burn wooden logs,
so changing to electric fires is not always ideal as the
whole fireplace will need to be removed, cleaned and a
power socket nearby. Families with small children may find
that an open fire is not viable anymore due to safety so
start to look into buying an electric fire.
Even animals can be in danger if they stray to near to
a naked flame so electric fires are a very good alternative.
There is no need to clean chimneys, take out the ashes
or clean the grates as electric fires do not require any
of these. In the years past, cleaning out chimneys was
a fulltime job for some and could be very dangerous. Some
people have found the time consuming nature of starting
a real log fire has become to tedious.
Electric fires have very attractive designs, some of which
emulate the look of log fires by producing realistic looking
wood and glowing bed of embers. Surrounds are designed
to look like wood, stone, marble or brick and give off
a very attractive feel to the room the electric fire is
in. |
